THE HUNT vs THE CLASS
CURIOSITY vs CURRICULUM
So, a friend asked me for a philosophy book recommendation. Guess what? I was stranded. I couldn’t name one. I don’t know how he sees me, but I am damned if he thinks of me as a guru. I am only trying to satisfy my curiosity.
But then, I was stranded. Not because I didn't know which books and authors to recommend. But because I didn't know the question he needed answers for. This inspired me to write on this topic.
I am not a curriculum guy. It just wouldn't work. And maybe this is why I have always hated school; because my search for knowledge and ideas always follows the direction of my curiosity and question. I simply follow the question wherever it leads. Wherever it stops, I pitch my tent. And when the cloud moves, I pack up the party and move along. So, I read books not in a particular order, but as the hunt demands.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not against curriculums. They are not just my best way. And yes, I have faced the disorder, overload, and formlessness that comes with free shooting as opposed to sticking with a systemized curriculum. But I have learned to overcome the feeling, and stick with the question. It has worked for me.
Following my curiosity and the question is the closest thing I have to an endless adventure. It gives me such a great feeling, a feeling of life, energy, and the hope of tremendous possibilities. Most importantly, I am glad that knowledge is infinite and the wonders never cease. The party never ends.
If you are anything like me (I wish you are), and you find it really hard to explore knowledge, and maybe develop a personal philosophy, and a personal reading habit, I am glad to help. It may not be much that I do, but it is honest work. But today, by the power conferred on me by Kurios, the imaginary god of curiosity, I call you to action and demand that you stick with the question. STICK WITH THE QUESTION.
As you go about your business today, develop an eye for questions. Don't assume, ask. With too many assumptions, you may drop your mental facility into a sedentary mode that harms your overall cognitive ability. Stay sharp today and ask why something works and why it may not work. Ask 'why' today.
Ciao,
Jegdy.
