*Rolls eyes*
Yes, coitus makes no sense.
Imagine all that upheaval in your body. All that discomfort. All that grunting and moaning like pigs. For what? 10, 20, maximum 30 minutes of pleasure? It makes no sense. Such a high labor activity with a few minutes of reward. Totally falters at the altar of rational thought. Damn!
What am I getting at? I just want to show you that humanity is not the place to look when looking for perfect rationality. We are not rational. Human nature is deeply irrational and we have spent time and studies denying this.
Examine again, that this high labour- low reward activity (intercourse or its other variants) has become a billion-dollar industry. From playboy shows and magazines of the heydays, to internet porn, to sex toy shops, to sex therapists (yea, real job), to prostitution, it is real doe. We make so much money from our irrationality. How can we not acknowledge this? Simple answer: we assume that human beings are inherently homo economicus; the rational being.
Robert Heinlein said "man is not a rational animal. He is a rationalizing animal." And there, years of believing that we are some rational creatures came tumbling down. I am glad though. I relish being wrong. It means there is always something more. You should try it.
But then, what can this revelation do for you? I'm glad you asked.
First, stop assuming the wrong things. Nothing wastes the major endeavors of your life like building on the wrong foundations. It is important to get the first principles of life correctly. You become more dangerous as an irrational being when you walk through life assuming that you are rational. The most pernicious things in life are the fruits of rationalizing our irrationalities. For instance, the most celebrated kinds of evil are the ones done in the name of 'the greater good.' It is the kind of evil perpetrated by someone who believes he is doing the right thing for a right cause (think suicide bombers). And such is an example of irrationality finding a rational framework that maximises its excesses. Watch yourself. Look inwards and examine. Find out what your true motivations are. Never assume that you are always right.
Also, learn human nature. Biology is great. Now you can tell me about the mechanisms of all life on earth. Yet, you can't look me in the eye and give me a good summary of how human nature functions. You can't even tell me why you haven't subscribed yet.How dare you?! (Thanks G.T)
You will be cheating yourself a great deal when you don't improve on your knowledge of human nature. You want to learn how to resolve conflict, get the job done, and influence people? Then learn human nature.
Human nature predicts that you read this article because it had sex in its headlines. See? Sex sells.
Busyminds will be back with new facts.
Au revoir
