Hello, greetings from behind my desk.Â
I observed that so many people are obsessed with the idea of changing the world that they do not seem to be making any real change at all. I unlearned that.Â
By bothering less about changing the world, I made tremendous changes in my life. Tremendous changes that have the potential to alter the world. Allow me to show you how.
NEWTON'S APPLE
I took a cue from one of the greatest scientists that ever lived; Isaac Newton. Even without a deep knowledge of maths and physics, nearly everyone knows Newton as the man who discovered gravitational law. And the way he went about it is a common story.
Isaac Newton was not thinking of how to change the world. He just wanted to make sense of it. He was just curious. The apple falling was not a rare event, and it could have happened to anyone. But Newton latched on to the apple with an impeccable curiosity that changed science forever. This is the way of the philosopher.
The difference between Newton and others who ignored their apples was that Newton embraced his own apple with a sense of wonder, and not with a villainous seriousness that was stiffened and buried into work.
Those who change the world are those who enjoy discovering it. Those who embrace their inner child, and dare not lose their lofty dreams. That is the spirit of philosophy.
Are you so obsessed with being productive that you can't enjoy the world or make meaning of it?Â
ARCHIMEDES' BATH
Let's see Archimedes.Â
Archimedes was a Greek philosopher and mathematician. One day, he got a task from the King. The king wanted a crown of pure gold and he was bothered that the goldsmiths cheated him out of it. So, he burdened Archimedes with the task of finding a metric to detect if the crown was pure gold or adulterated. Archimedes set about his task with utter seriousness...until he was tired. Yet, no result. He decided to take a bath. The bath that changed physics forever.
Upon setting himself in the tub, he observed that the water level rose. And then, his curiosity kicked in. By asking the right questions, Archimedes stumbled upon the now famous Archimedes principle.Â
Newton and Archimedes are products of the school of curiosity. The spirit of philosophy is curiosity.
All I am saying…
Is that by being fascinated by your world, and wanting to make sense of it, you have a greater shot at changing it. Be curious.
Is that you might want to enjoy the moment and pay attention to the seeming accidents that happen around you. Accidents have potentials for discovery.
EVOLUTION POINT
Are you curious? Do you want to pursue your curiosity in the right community? Do you want your ideas to evolve? Check Here
Evolution Point is a creative school of philosophy. We believe that if you make sense of the world enough, you will have something of value that will change the world forever. You need to be a part of it.
Finally, do philosophy. You don't need expertise. You need a sense of wonder. Follow your topic of interest with all rigor. Make it a side project. Find your fallen apple. Take your Archimedes bath. Find the best things in the strangest places. And watch the world change before your very eyes.Â
This is Busyminds, and I will catch you later.
